March 2009 Edition

FRIDAY February 27, 2009

This is the HTML version of the IndexWa.org newsletter. Sent to a WHOPPING 90 MEMBERS monthly (well, most of the time). Hey, we
never claimed
to be big. News As It Happens has 50 members.  Join'em.

IF YOU HAVE NEWS TO REPORT AND WOULD LIKE TO HAVE IT IN OUR NEWSLETTER, THE NEXT DEADLINE IS FEBRUARY 21ST, 2009.  NEWS AS IT HAPPENS IS ACCEPTED AT ANY TIME.

This month's newsletter is dedicated in memory of Malcom Rose, who passed away February 25, 2009.  For those that did not know Malcom, he was a man of tremendous courage and not ONCE did we hear him complain about his life threatening, incurable disease.  He always had hope and a positive outlook on life.

1st Up

Not a lot going on lately around here, so this newsletter is a bit short.  We apologize.  There were a couple of incidents that were fire related in the area, but we failed to follow-up.  We were quite busy.

We asked for comments in our previous newsletter and we got'em.

The print is too small...Don't know if we are going to fix that one.  Most viewers/readers have an option to enlarge the print.  If we enlarge the print at publishing time, it will throw the format off.  We MAY increase it by TWO POINTS.  This is 9pt.  This is 11pt.  So here is a duplicate of this tidbit at 11pt.  Just keep in mind, 99% of people can adjust the font size via their Email client or Browser, so we really see no need to adjust on our end.

So here is a duplicate of this tidbit at 11pt.

DUPLICATE AT 11pt.

If enough people comment about it and like it, we will raise the pt to 11.  Majority rules.

2.  Sending the newsletter at midnight is not a good idea (with an explanation).  Uhhhh, oh well.  We see no harm in that one.

3.  And this: Break the newsletter down into parts so it is not so long.  Hmmmmm, that is a thought to consider, but then the questions arises, how many emails do you want from from us?  One a week?  We are trying to keep it simple and easy to manage.  There are times we just don't have any news to put in here during one week.  This one is thought provoking, so we will give it some thought, but as you see by THIS newsletter, some time there just AIN'T NUTTIN' TO PUT IN DA' NEWSLETTER..

Website Correction

Throughout the site at IndexWa.org you may notice a lot of information from David Cameron. He has a lot of knowledge about the Town of Index as well as knowledge about the valley in general (heck, he wrote a book which by the way is introduced on IndexWa.org). If you are interested in the book, contact us and we will forward your information to David.

We have inadvertently introduced David Cameron, PhD. as "THE" Town Historian. We stand corrected as of this post. David Cameron is "A" Town Historian.

That in mind, David IS The President of The Historical Society for The Town of Index.

We apologize for the error.

Colleen & Her Uncle

We received an email from Colleen, the niece of the late Wes Smith.  Wes was quite a man.  I had an opportunity to talk with him on one of my many visits to Index before moving here.  Colleen & I were exchanging emails about Wes Smith's house here in town.  Read on for a cute story: (slightly edited to protect privacy of individuals).

A short story about that house...my Uncle Wes was quite a hunter. My Auntie Hazel had nagged him forever to put a bigger window in the front. He got out his chainsaw and cut out the window a couple of days before deer season. My Dad teased him forever because the window set at an angle. Uncle Wes was not much for home maintenance anyway. He told my Dad "that ought to shut her up til' she thinks of something else to nag about". What a character. I can still smell my Aunts chicken and dumplings cooking and she made the best chocolate cake I have ever eaten. I used to love to help her cook. -Colleen-

Index Community Garden Project

The Index Community Garden Project will have its spring organizational meeting on Tuesday March 3, 7:00 p.m. at the Fire Hall. Anyone who is interested in growing or learning more about raising one's own food, or just helping out is welcome to attend.

Support for the project has come from Seed Savers Exchange, a non-profit organization committed to the preservation of heirloom varieties and having people provide for their own healthy nutrition. They have donated over a hundred packets of seed left over from last season, part of their "Herman's Garden" program honoring the late Herman Warsh and his wife Maryanne Mott, who were financial and inspirational backers for the creation of SSE, located in Decorah, Iowa.

For further information contact David Cameron (360) 793-1534 or Sue Cross (360) 793-7744.

DineOutAds.com

Like we don't have enough to do (we don't. I'm unemployed once again).  We started another site www.dineoutads.com.  It is similar to the MillionDollarHomePage, in fact, it is a replica but targeted at restaurants, catering, bistros, etc;.

We read on line, that pixel ads are a rip-off as most of the links are to the persons OWN SITE trying to sell you something.  This is not the case with Dine Out Ads.  We don't even know if this will work out but we are willing to try.  AND it's HONEST.  You'll find now links leading any place else except to the purchaser of the ad (of which there is one so far).

We don't plug for profit organizations but since we own IndexWa.org, we are plugging for ourselves. <grin>.

The next time you are at your favorite eatery, let them know about us.  We would appreciate it.

Have them read the Terms and Conditions and THANKS.

A Site to See:

Preikestolen Norway Photo Gallery by Henk Binnendijk: http://www.pbase.com/henkbinnendijk/preikestolen -- You think Index, Wa. is beautiful?  This place comes close to our beauty here in Washington State. If you have the desire to travel and hike out of country, this is the place to be.  Preikestolen can be reached from Stavanger by ferry (to Tau) and bus (to the trailhead). The parking lot (not free) has spaces for cars, campers and large RV's. There's a campground (Preikestolen Camping) about 5 kilometers from the parking lot.
